Extreme Adventure

Ages 7+

Indoor climbing walls are all well and good but they can't compete with the buzz you get from hoisting yourself up a hunk of rock in the great outdoors. The country side around Aviemore and in the Cairngorms national park lends itself very well to this sport which most kids love.  So if it clambering over rocks or hosting yourself up a shear cliff face the Cairngorms is the place to visit. There are a number of adventure companies in the area that will take your kids out rock climbing and there are a adventure parks where being hosted to great heights on a rope is part of the overall fun.

G2outdoors Aviemore run half day taster sessions for families with young children and bespoke coaching sessions for teenagers and adults wishing to hone skills and learn to lead climb. http://www.g2outdoor.co.uk/  (01479 811008)

The Landmark Centre.  This amusement park has an outdoor climbing frame and tree top walks on rope ladders and suspended walkways. The park is great fun for the kids and features the fauna and flora of the area. Educational and fun!  http://www.landmarkpark.co.uk/ tel. 0800 7313446

Weaseling

Imagine a heap of giant boulders: over, under and around which Mother Nature has set an obstacle course. Well that's the new activity of weaseling. A softer option than caving proper, you still have to well, weasel your way through rocky tunnels, voids and tight spaces- the difference is you've above ground, there's always an easier path, and you'll frequently reach daylight before it's on to the next chamber. Involving a mix of low-level climbing and surface caving, it's great fun- especially for younger kids, who'll find it easier to squeeze through those gaps than you will.  Boots and Paddles http://www.boots-n-paddles.co.uk/ 0845 612 5567
